Withheld Caller ID

Hi - I'm evaluating Phone Amego before purchasing & so far have been very impressed. One thing that's currently got me stumped though is how I'd block a call from a number that's withholding its Caller ID. I've successfully blocked individual numbers, but can't work out what I'd need to add to the lookup file to match withheld caller ID.

Thanks in advance for any help

Regards

Nick

It's hard to match a caller ID (phone number) that isn't present. You could match the "withheld" string or similar that appears in the Caller ID field, or any name given.

A handy trick is to add an incoming call to the Block List on the fly using the Action menu in the lower right of the Call Status window.

Kind Regards,

- Peter

Hi Peter - thanks for your reply. What I've found is that whilst I can add an incoming call to the block list as you suggest when CallerID is displayed, when it is withheld it doesn't get added to the file. I've manually added the line

"Not Available","WITHHELD",block,08-06 11:54 AM

which is how it appears in the call log to the lookup file & it now blocks every call, whether the CLI is withheld or not! I've also tried

,"WITHHELD",block,08-06 11:54 AM

with the same result.

Thanks

Regards

Nick

Phone Amego has a Debug Log you can enable under the More tab to see what the program is doing. The first column of the LookupFile is for the phone number so including a text string is equivalent to a "empty" phone number which could match any call. The 2nd form should work better.

Thanks Peter, I'll give that a try. Could you tell me where the debug log is stored within the filesystem please, as I'd like to import this into Splunk to make it easier to search than the headless server I'm running PA on.

The telemarketers are getting smarter. They now withhold the caller ID. So I think I followed the suggestion correctly by inserting a line in the 'Look Up File' that has a blank Phone Number in the Phone number column, NOT AVAILABLE in the 'Display Name' column, a block in the 'Action' Column and the date and time in the 'Date' column. Am I correct in this? It wasn't quit clear to me, from the discussions, whether a bank Phone Number column would block all calls.
Thanks for you help.

"NOT AVAILABLE" can mean no information was provided so there is nothing to match (depending on your telephone device). So you are asking Phone Amego to reject calls that do not have any Caller ID. In the US, I believe it's illegal for telemarketers to deliberately withhold their Caller ID.

You may wish to copy down their contact information and report them to the FCC for prosecution.

Blocking such calls might require a slight software update to handle this special case.
