32 Bit application

By downloading various releases and usage of the 'file' command I believe the last version of Phone Amego that contains a 32bit, i386, executable is version 1.4.17.
I'm trying the application out at the moment and it looks like it will fit my needs. It is installed on an old Mac Mini circa 2006, a Core Duo Intel (32bit).

A few questions then:
Is this the last version that contains a 32bit executable?
Are there technical reasons for not targeting i386 anymore?

As far as I know, the latest version is built for "Universal (32/64-bit Intel)", or so it says.

The only reason not to target these older architectures is that Apple keeps changing the Xcode defaults to no longer build for them, or the old architectures do not support some newer API. As a result it takes some time and attention to build and test for these older architectures.
