Handling two people with the same phone number

Real-life scenario:

  1. Placed a call to Tim Wilson from my Address Book. Tim's name & number are added at the top of my Recent calls menu.
  2. Placed another call to Tim from my Recent menu. Kathy Wilson's name & number are added at the top of my Recent menu. (Kathy & Tim are both in my Address Book with the same phone number.)
  3. Placed additional calls to Tim from my Recent menu.
  4. Placed or received a few other calls. Kathy remains in the first five Recent calls and Tim is gone, even though I've not called Kathy, and she's not called me.
It seems to me #2 is a bug. Phone Amego should not need to look up the name for a phone number when the name is in the Recent menu item used to place the call.

Incoming calls are a little trickier. Phone Amego can use Caller ID to get the phone number. At that point, it has three places to find the name associated with that number:

  1. Recent calls list (sorted from most recent to oldest)
  2. Address Book (sorted by name)
  3. name from Caller ID
It seems to me Phone Amego should perform name lookup in that order. #1 is an educated guess, e.g., if I called Tim, it's likely he's the one calling back.

I agree with your first scenario to keep the existing name from the Recent submenu if any.

In the case of an inbound call, I think PA can do a little better.
There's more contact information in the Address Book than in the Recent menu,
so if there is a matching entry in your Address Book, you probably want PA to find it.
I'd like to use the most recent name in the call history to choose between multiple
matches in your Address Book.

I have also noticed this bug while using a hosted PBX with an Asterisk appliance when I had two contacts listed with the same number, but just dismissed it as I did not really think it mattered because the phone functioned the same with no complications other than this small bug I noticed.

More recent versions of Phone Amego look for the best matching entry in your Address Book based on the information provided. If both the phone number and name match, it will prefer that entry over one that just has the same phone number. If there's is no name information provided, it will just pick the first matching entry. It doesn't normally search the call history to guess which name is more likely.

If you want me to debug a specific behavior, please describe what input was presented, and in what way PA did not work the way you expected.

Kind Regards,
